steps to quarantine

1

Secure Horse

Serendipity most often assists horses that are coming from the kill pen in Eaton, Colorado. However, we are happy to help quarantine horses from other kill pens, rescues, auctions, etc. We do not accept stallions. Horses must have a negative Coggins test prior to arrival at Serendipity. Please email us with any questions.

2

Arrange Transportation

Serendipity can provide transportation assistance. Please email us for a quote if you require transportation for your horse. We are happy to provide quotes for horse transportation anywhere in the U.S.

If we are unable to assist with transportation we have recommendations for other providers.

3

Quarantine Begins

Quarantine is for a minimum of 30 days. We can extend quarantine periods upon special request and as needed for the horse's health and safety.

Please review our quarantine contract below for more detailed information on our quarantine policies and procedures. A signed contract and the Veterinary Release form is due upon the horse's arrival.

4

Refeeding

When a horse arrives we feed 20-25 lbs of grass hay per day. We purchase our hay from Double Beam Ranch in Elizabeth, Colorado. They can provide current hay testing results.  Most horses come to quarantine extremely thin and malnourished and we do our best to avoid refeeding syndrome and colic. We are happy to provide additional grain, pelleted forage, and supplements that the owner provides after the horse has completed 14 days on grass hay. If a horse is extremely emaciated we may require additional funds to provide unlimited hay for the animal. We will work with owners on an individual basis to ensure the horse is receiving the proper nutrition during their quarantine.

5

Vet + Farrier Care

We recommend and encourage owners to schedule a vet appointment and farrier appointment during the horse's quarantine. Vets and farriers should not be scheduled until after day 7 to allow the animal to adjust to their new surroundings, unless there is an urgent or emergency situation.

We highly recommend Dr. Quay from Iron Horse Equine, located in Elizabeth Colorado.

We highly recommend Travis Duskin from Rafter D. Horseshoeing located in Kiowa, Colorado.

6

Quarantine Ends

Quarantine ends on day 30. Transportation should be arranged for day 30 or day 31. Please see the policies and procedures form if you require a longer stay.

Owners should schedule a vet appointment to receive a clean bill of health for proper transportation procedure - especially if the horse will be transported across state lines. Owners are also responsible for providing a copy of the brand inspection for each horse that is being transported.
